Aleksi-Mikael Kivelä is one of Appmore’s IAM consultants, and his daily work is filled with interesting challenges and significant responsibilities. In this blog post, we take a closer look at Aleksi’s workday and explore what it’s like to work as an expert in Identity and Access Management (IAM).
Starting the day with system updates and problem solving
Aleksi has worked for five years in ServiceNow development, focusing on integration implementations, incident management, and needs assessments. Last fall, he expanded his expertise by starting to work with IAM solutions. Initially, he went through the key features of IAM under the guidance of a senior consultant and was gradually given responsibility for customer development projects and IAM system implementations.
Aleksi’s day starts early, with a cup of coffee in hand as he checks his emails. After this, he moves on to the first task of the day: updating the customer’s environment to the latest version of the IAM system. The update brings new features and improvements, but it may also reveal minor bugs, which Aleksi fixes manually. This careful work ensures that the customer’s systems run smoothly.
Meetings with customers where teamwork solves problems
The morning also includes a customer meeting to discuss development tasks and any issues that have arisen during the past week. Aleksi tackles customer challenges with a collaborative approach, working closely with both the team and the client to solve problems. One of the issues raised by a customer was related to user account permissions in Active Directory. Resolving it required elevating IAM user credentials, which was a crucial step in finding the solution.
Aleksi is involved in several different projects. His responsibilities include developing IAM systems to meet customer needs, which often involves creating new features and fixing bugs. Development work requires precise problem-solving, as Aleksi carefully analyzes the root causes of issues and resolves them step by step to ensure the systems operate reliably.
Balancing breaks, productivity, and continuous learning
In the middle of the day, when his thoughts need a refresh, Aleksi takes short breaks. During these breaks, he might go for a short walk or focus on something entirely different to clear his mind- This allows him to return to work feeling more energized.
Aleksi has been working in ServiceNow development for five years, but he only started specializing in IAM last fall. His workdays are never the same, and continuous learning is a core part of the job. Aleksi actively follows ServiceNow communities and enhances his skills by answering others’ questions. This keeps him up to date and provides new ideas that he can apply in his own work.
Wrapping up the day and reflecting on accomplishments
At the end of the day, Aleksi reviews his progress and ensures that all tasks are on track for the next workday. With customer challenges solved and innovative solutions implemented, he ends his day with a sense of accomplishment.
